Scoring Formula

// Overall Score (0–10)

Overall = (Accuracy × 0.25)

+ (Ease of Use × 0.20)

+ (Value × 0.20)

+ (Speed × 0.15)

+ (Availability × 0.10)

+ (Support × 0.10)

Criteria Explained

Accuracy

25% weight

Sensitivity and specificity compared to laboratory reference methods. Based on published peer-reviewed studies, ISO 15197:2013 certification data, and manufacturer-published clinical validation reports. This is the most heavily weighted criterion because a test that gives wrong results is worse than no test at all.

Ease of Use

20% weight

How easy is the test to perform correctly at home? We evaluate sample collection method (urine, finger-prick, swab), instruction clarity, result readability (digital vs line), and the likelihood of user error. A test that is difficult to use correctly will have lower real-world accuracy than its clinical validation suggests.

Value

20% weight

Price-to-performance ratio. We consider the cost per test, the cost of ongoing supplies (strips, lancets), and whether the test's accuracy justifies its price compared to alternatives. A premium-priced test must demonstrate meaningfully superior performance to score well on value.

Speed

15% weight

Time from sample collection to result. For rapid tests, this is the stated result time. For lab-based services, this is the turnaround time from sample receipt to result delivery. Faster results are weighted positively, especially for time-sensitive conditions.

Availability

10% weight

How easy is the test to obtain? We consider availability in major European markets, online availability, shipping times, and whether a prescription is required. Tests that are difficult to obtain score lower, even if technically excellent.

Support

10% weight

Quality of user support resources: instruction quality, customer helpline, companion app, and whether physician consultation is included with results. For complex tests (STI panels, thyroid), strong support resources are particularly important.

Data Sources

Clinical Accuracy Data: Published peer-reviewed studies, manufacturer clinical validation reports, ISO 15197:2013 certification data, and regulatory submission documents (EMA, FDA).
Consumer Reviews: Aggregated ratings from Amazon, Trustpilot, and Google Reviews. We weight reviews by recency and volume, and apply outlier detection to remove suspected fake reviews.
Price Data: Price ranges sourced from major European retailers (Amazon.de, Amazon.co.uk, Boots, pharmacy chains) and updated quarterly.
Regulatory Status: CE marking status, FDA clearance, and CLIA certification verified through official regulatory databases.

Score Interpretation

9.0–10.0OutstandingBest-in-class. Exceptional across all criteria.
8.0–8.9ExcellentHighly recommended. Minor trade-offs only.
7.0–7.9GoodSolid choice with some limitations.
6.0–6.9AverageAcceptable but outperformed by alternatives.
Below 6.0Below AverageSignificant limitations. Consider alternatives.

Update Frequency

All product scores and reviews are reviewed quarterly (January, April, July, October). Scores may be updated between quarterly reviews if significant new clinical data is published, a product is discontinued, or pricing changes materially. The "Last Updated" date on each review reflects the most recent update.
